Since completing the Roswell
trilogy, see: http://hpanwo-bb.blogspot.com/2018/12/roswell-redeemed-is-here.html,
I have been making notes for a new novel. I first had the idea for the new
novel while I was finishing Roswell
Redeemed. As is always the case with my development style, a lot of the preparation
has been mental, envisioning the characters, the setting and the plot etc. I
have outlined those in note form; I have decided on a starting point for the
narrative and have ideas about where the storyline can progress from there. As
usual, I have not planned the entire novel from start to finish. No doubt I
will hit some "walls" as I did with Roswell ,
but I made it over them back then and I'm confident I can do so this time. This
novel will be similar in some ways to the Roswells in that I intend it to be
historical and once more deviate from a given point in the past into an
alternate history where something that is different to the real world changes
everything for the subsequent future. In Roswell
this starting point was July 1947. In this new novel it will be earlier. I've
not pinpointed it, but I am currently looking at the end, or close to the end,
of the Great War or World War One. The story will be strongly centred on the
element of espionage. For research I have been reading and watching a lot of real
life spy stories, such as biographies of the Cambridge
spies, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e36KMyp-GDE.
This area of research began during the writing of the Roswell
trilogy because I originally intended the Julian Spencer character to be a spy;
but I soon realized he did not have the temperament for such a self-disciplined
proclivity. One of my new characters for the new novel most certainly does. I
have chosen the working title of The
Obscurati Chronicles. This was what I called a series of sketches which
eventually formed into an abortive novel a few years ago, see: https://hpanwo-bb.blogspot.com/2010/02/obscurati-chronicles-part-1.html.
If you read these sketches you will see that I have already incorporated some
of their material into Roswell . How
much of the remainder I will use for this new novel, I can't be sure. My next
step is to write a sample for free publication on Ben's Bookcase, as I did with
the Roswells, for example see: https://hpanwo-bb.blogspot.com/2016/12/roswell-revealed-sample-first-chapter.html.
I wasn't sure whether to do this again, but I have decided that I should. A
sample chapter both interests potential future readers and morally commits me
to completing the work. I am not sure how long this next step will take, but
bookmark this page for upcoming developments. It is interesting and encouraging
to look back at the post I made when I first came up with the idea for the Roswell
trilogy, see: https://hpanwo-bb.blogspot.com/2015/05/aurora-new-novel.html.
In a couple of years, will I look back at this post with the same hindsight?
